Supplies You’ll Need

  • Glue stick or liquid glue

Step 1: Prepare your Paper

Start by preparing paper pieces of paper for the process. I prepared some water color pieces of paper. I simply painted some watercolors onto watercolor paper. After painting, allow the papers to dry. You can also use any other kind of paper. This is a great project for using scrap paper too.

I also wanted to create a gold frame for the outside of my mosaic. I used a gold acrylic paint which I also painted, dried and cut into rectangles.

Step 2: Cut the Paper

Cut small shapes from your scraps into squares, rectangles and triangles. They can of course be cut later into any shape you need.

Step 3: Sketch a Design

Sketch a design onto the paper, use a piece of white construction paper or cardstock Leave space around the outside to add your border. You do not need to be a great artist for the drawing. Sketch it in pencil, it will be covered in the end with the small pieces of paper. You can also use your eraser to remove any pencil marks you may need to at the end.

Step 4: Glue your Pieces

Start by creating a border around the outside of the paper. When placing the paper, leave small spaces in between each one. This will make it look like the grout on a real mosaic. Continue adding colors to your design. I added red, pink and purple pieces to make the hearts. I also used brown to make the tree branch.

Next, I light blue pieces of paper to make the sky around the tree.
