There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Clover
St. Patrick's Day is coming soon and I love reading "There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Clover" by Lucille Colandro. She has a series of these books to go along with holidays and seasons. They are so FUN to read aloud. Kids love the funny and outrageous things she swallows. I love the repetition which even allows beginning readers to read along with you as you read.
I created this fun activity that allows kids to place items she swallowed into her mouth ( ziploc bag) as you read the book aloud. It is great for practicing sequencing too. I have included a FREE template that includes color and black and white versions of all the pieces. You can print in color or print the black and white version to color. Either way, have your child cut out the pieces, don't worry if it does not look perfect. Cutting and coloring will help your child with their fine motor skills.
Supplies:
- "There was an old Lady who Swallowed a Clover" by Lucille Colandro
- White paper for printing
- Ziploc bag
- Stapler
- Glue stick
- Scissors
- Crayons or markers if coloring
- There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Clover template ( FREEBIE BELOW)
Instructions:
- Print out the copies of the template you are going to use from the FREE PDF below. Color the pieces if you are not using the color print out.
- You will need to cut our the pieces for the retelling before you read the book. You can choose to cut out the old lady or just use as is on the print out.
- As you read the story, your child will place the correct piece into the ziploc bag.
- At the end, add the leprechaun next to the old lady to show them dancing together. You may even want to get up and dance with your child.
- Finally, the old lady giggles so much out come all of the items and we see a rainbow.
- The rainbow appears with the leprechaun. You can leave as is or glue onto colored paper.
