The Day it Rained Hearts Crafts and Math Extension

The Day it Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond is a great story to read for Valentine's Day. This is a book about friendship and creating valentines, so you may want to even read it earlier. The main character, Cornelia Augusta, goes outside one day and it is raining hearts! She goes around collecting as many hearts as she can. When she heads inside, she thinks about how Valentine's day is approaching. She then decides to use the hearts she collected to create special valentines for her friends. She carefully thinks and creates a unique valentine for her friends. We see her creations at the end as they are delivered to her friends in the mail.

DIY valentines

I love the characters creativity and would encourage you to have your child or classroom create handmade valentines for special individuals in their life. They can choose a pet, parent, grandparent or friend.

The Day it Rained Heart Art  Instructions:

  1. Begin by painting your watercolor paper.  Paint the bottom gray to look like the sidewalk. The middle will be painted green to look like bushes. Finally the top will be painted gray to look like the sky.  Tip:  I added a little blue and green into the sky and painted diagonal to make the sky look different from the sidewalk.
  2. Give the watercolor time to dry before moving on ( this does not take too long) If you are doing this in a classroom, I suggest doing the watercolor before lunch or specials and completing the rest of the art later.
  1. Use a black thin marker to add details.  Trace where you painted the bush and add lines to represent rain and puddles.
  1. Next, cut a strip of yellow paper.  Glue to the side of the paper.
  1. Select a hand from the The Day it Rained Hearts Template and cut out.  Glue the hand to the yellow strip of paper.  Tip:  The fingers do not need to be cut out perfecting since a heart will be glued on top.
  2. Cut a small strip of yellow paper for the sleeve and glue on the wrist area of the hand.
  1. Cut out 10 hearts ( you can use more or less if you would like)
  1. Glue one heart on the fingers of the hand, allowing the thumb to remain visible.  Then glue the remainder of the hearts around your painting.
