Ten Red Apples Math
"Ten Red Apples" by Pat Hutchins is a great book about counting, subtraction and sharing. I love the repetition and easy to read words in this book. It makes it enjoyable for young children to read. In this book the farmer has an apple tree with 10 red apples, but the animals keep on eating apples, one at a time. Soon, there is only one apple left.
After reading, you can reenact what happens in the book. Print out the provided tree and flashcards. Then use red pom poms to act as apples.
As you read or after you read add the ten apples to the tree. Take one apple away at a time. Match up each flashcard that goes along with the math problem you are reenacting. The flashcards can be laminated for multiple uses. Then you can write the answer to the math problem with a dry erase marker for easy erasing.
When completed, add all the apples back on the tree. Just like in the book make a new red apple tree for more math fun!
