Seahorse Art Activity
Create this adorable seahorse as a fun summer inspired craft. I was inspired to create this by the art of Eric Carle. Did you know he illustrated all the books he wrote? I have always enjoyed his books and his art. When I taught elementary school I even had an Eric Carle art club. We created art inspired by Eric Carle's style. Eric Carle painted a thicker type of tissue paper for his art. He used many tools and created textures and a variety of colors. He then had a huge array of colors and patterns to choose from for his illustrations for his books. He would draw the illustrations and cut the tissue paper to fit into the empty spaces of his illustrations. After reading "Mr. Seahorse" by Eric Carle, your child can make their very own seahorse to retell the story or tell their own story.
This craft came together easily with some torn tissue paper. I created a tracer of a seahorse which I traced on a piece of black paper. This provided a nice background for the tissue paper. It is easy for any child to simply glue the torn or cut pieces of tissue paper onto the black cut out of the seahorse.
Supplies:
- Tissue paper
- Black construction paper
- Glue stick
- Markers
- Scissors
- Seahorse tracer
Instructions:
- Use Mr. Seahorse tracer to trace seahorse on black paper and cut out.
- Take tissue paper. You can cut or have your child tear pieces off. I like to have mine prepared and ready to glue. Glue tissue paper onto the seahorse cutout.
- When finished gluing, flip the seahorse over and cut off excess tissue paper. You may want to help your child complete this step.
- Cut a circle out of white tissue paper. Glue onto the seahorse and add a black dot for eye.
- Next, use markers to create dots. I used a few different colors.
- Let your child be creative and add any other details they would like. You will be amazed with the creative minds of children!
