Scarecrow Tens and Ones

This fall create this cute scarecrow to reinforce learning about numbers. Students will be able to understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones. After, teaching this concept give each child a two digit number to make their scarecrow with. After, have them create the scarecrow with straw hair representing that number.

Supplies:

  1. Copy of scarecrow, hat, and shirt
  2. Straw tens and ones
  3. Copy of writing sheet
  4. Scissors
  5. Black marker
  6. Glue stick
  7. Tape
  8. Pipe cleaner

Directions:

  1. Print out copies of the pieces you need to create the scarecrow. It is easiest to print on the color paper you want or need for each item.
Print on the paper color of choice.
  1. Cut out the shirt, scarecrow head, and hat. Provide each child with a pipe cleaner, a tens and ones sheet and a writing sheet.
  1. Tape the pipe cleaner down to build your scarecrow on top of. Begin by gluing the shirt on top of the pipe cleaner.
  1. Next, glue the head at the top. Leave some pipe cleaner visible in between the shirt and the head.
  1. After, add the straw hat to the top of the scarecrow's head.
  1. Now, prepare the correct number of straw tens and ones to add to the scarecrow. Encourage your child to count out loud as they glue each ten and one onto the scarecrow.
  1. Then, add the details for the face using a black marker.
  1. Finally, have your child complete the writing portion writing the correct number of tens and ones on the worksheet. Glue the completed writing on the bottom of the scarecrow art.
