Kindergarten, Here I Come

Kindergarten, Here I Come

Heading into Kindergarten is an important time for children. There are so many emotions that go along with making that big step to starting school. The book "Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come" by Nancy Carlson is a great story that captures those emotions on the first day of Kindergarten.

This book was given out to children as a part of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Program? The program provides free books to children from birth to age five no matter the family's income. I LOVE this! Reading is so important as children are developing and learning reading skills.

I have come across many of these books in local thrift stores. In fact, I found 10 in one trip alone! I started thinking how great it would be to create activities to go along with these books. I hope this can reach many families since the program benefits so many. If you don't receive the books, be on the look out! Or you can order the book "Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come" by Nancy Carlson on Amazon.

This activity is great to complete with your child before they head to Kindergarten. In the story, the main character, Henry pack a picture of his family in his backpack ( in case he got lonely) Let your children decorate their own backpack and draw a family picture to put inside it. You may even want to let them take a real photo with them when they go to school.

After decorating their backpack, you can cut a slit to place the photo in.

Then, place their photo into the backpack and attach with glue.

In the story the characters discuss things that he thinks will happen in Kindergarten. Have a discussion with your child, ask them questions and create a list of things they may do in school. The list will be beneficial to your child since they may have little experience with writing. Allow them to write and draw what they think will happen in school. You can allow them to use invented spelling and do their best work up to their ability. Your little one will be excited about their new adventure in Kindergarten and ready to start at their new school.
