Giraffe Valentine
You can easily guide your child or students through a tutorial to make this giraffe valentine. I love when children are given the opportunity to create their own art. It is always so great to see the variety that children can create.
When do this activity, I would stress to your child to draw the shapes big to leave room for errors in cutting. Cutting with scissors is an important skill and helps with fine motor skills. It is however challenging for little ones. I would give your child help as needed after they attempt on their own.
To begin, use a piece of yellow paper and have your child draw a large U. Then have them draw a line across the top of the U and cut out the shape. This will be the head for the giraffe.
Next, Use another piece of paper and have your child draw a shape similar to a tree trunk. Cut this out to use as the giraffe's neck.
I like to save the scraps after cutting to use to make the rest of the giraffe's features. Draw two triangle for the giraffe's ears and two small rectangles for the giraffe's ossicones. Did you know this is the name for the pointy tops next to the giraffe's ears? They are a bony piece of the giraffe attached to its skull. It is used by the giraffe during fighting.
Next, glue the neck down on piece of colored paper of your choice. After, glue the head on top of it, I angled mine. I then placed the ears and ossicones on the top of the giraffe's head.
Next, draw a line to separate the giraffe's face. I originally had this yellow but decided later it looked better brown. So, I cut off the bottom piece of the giraffe's face and replaced it with brown paper. You can also have your child color or paint this part as well.
Add two white circle for the giraffe's eyes and use a black marker to draw circles to the middle of the white circles.
Next, cut out two brown circles to add to the ossicones on the top of the giraffe's head.
Add brown dots to the giraffe's neck and head. I used a circle sponge brush and brown paint. You can however complete this step with paint and your child's fingerprints or with a brown marker.
Add two black spots and a smile to complete the giraffe's face.
To complete your valentine, add some hearts around the giraffe.
Print out the words or have you child write it on the paper. You can have them add their name to the paper as well.
