Blinking Firefly

Blinking Firefly

I love when summer rolls around and fireflies come out. It reminds me of summer spent in Pennsylvania when I was a child. We called them lighting bugs and as dusk rolled around outside we went. Armed with a jar poked with hole, my sisters and I were excited to see how many lighting bugs we could get. It was so cool to see them light up as we chased them around hoping to catch one to observe in our jars. At the end of the time, it was always nice to set them free and see them all fly off.

"Blink, Blink, Blink in Sync: Silent Fireworks" by Sharon Cassano Lochman reminded me of my summers in Pennsylvania. I was excited to create a cute firefly craft that could easily be created. Much of this craft is made using a print out of shapes. I love to use shapes to show children how simple art can be to make, even on their own.

Supplies:

  1. Velum Paper or clear contact paper
  2. Toilet paper or paper towel tube
  3. Black Pipe cleaner
  4. Markers
  5. Battery operated tealight
  6. Scissors
  7. Gluestick
  8. Masking Tape
  9. Stapler
  10. Firefly Printout ( I recommend printing on white cardstock)

Directions:

  1. Print out firefly ( you can print page 1 in color or print page 2 and color yourself) and cut out the pieces.
  2. Cut out 2 wings out of the vellum paper or clear contact paper. I used the black wings I created as a tracer to make the clear wings.
Cut all the pieces of the firefly's body
  1. Cut the black pipe cleaner into 6 pieces for the firefly's legs. Tape or glue onto the back of the large body piece. If gluing, allow time to dry before moving to the next step.
I used masking tape to attach the pipe cleaner.
  1. Glue the circle head to the top of the body and attach the wings behind the body of the firefly.
Space the wings out so both sets are visible
  1. Next, glue the firefly's eyes on the head. Then draw a smile with a black marker.
Glue eyes and draw smile to complete the face.
  1. Add details to the firefly's body using markers.
Be creative and add any details you would like to the firefly's body.
  1. Next, use the toilet paper tube to create a holder for the tealight. Simply cut a small section and bend the end. Secure with masking tape to create a holder for the tealight candle. Attach this to the bottom of the firefly's body with a stapler.
  1. Use making tape to hold the tealight in the holder. This makes it easy to remove and to turn the light on and off.
  1. This adorable firefly is complete. So fun and easy to make with your little one. They will love running around with their firefly especially at dusk with all the other fireflies. Have the best summer fun with this craft!
Completed firefly, ready for summer fun!
Insect Books
This is a great collection of books about insects. Insects are usually disliked, but I love how much you can learn about how important insects are to our world. Reading aloud books to your child is such an important part of growing their love for reading. I always recommend picking
Dung Beetle Insect Craft
When I read “Steve the Dung Beetle: On A Roll” by Susan R. Stoltz I knew I had to create this craft. This is the kind of book my boys love, I mean it is about a dung beetle, what boy wouldn’t love it. The mention of anything about poop
