Egg Carton Flower Threading

Use an old cardboard egg carton to create these adorable flowers. These are great for creating a fun, hands on and engaging activity for your toddler or preschooler. This is activity is wonderful for developing fine motor skills and hand eye coordination. This will help your little one strengthen their hand muscles that are vital for pencil grip for writing later on in development. Older children can even enjoy creating these beautiful flowers. They can be strung together and used as room decorations. How fun would these look hanging on the wall.

Reuse an egg carton to create these flowers. Think of ways to reuse items, instead of throwing it away in the landfill. I had this egg carton from some Easter eggs I purchased at the craft store. I saved the egg carton knowing I could use it to create something with.

Supplies:

1. cardboard egg carton
2. Acrylic paints or markers
3. Paintbrushes
4. Scissors
5. Awl
6. Green pipe cleaners
7. Silicone mat

Instructions:

1. Cut the egg cups apart on the egg carton. This was a little tough and would be best completed by an adult.

2. Round each cup around the edges to make their shape more petal like.

3. Use an awl to punch holes in the bottom of the egg cups. You may also carefully complete this step with a sharp pair of scissors.

4. Use your scissors to cut slits on the side of the egg cups to form petals.

5. Using acrylic paint or even markers color the egg cups to create flowers.

6. Once flowers are dry, you can thread the egg carton flowers on pipe cleaners.

7. As your child explores and plays with the egg carton flower consider asking them to name the colors of the flowers. You can have them count the flowers as they place them on the pipe cleaners. You can also ask your child to count the total number of flowers. Lastly, have your child place the flowers on the pipe cleaners in a pattern. Creating a pattern helps children organize their thoughts, develop a plan and carry out a task all while being involved in play.
