Dung Beetle Insect Craft
When I read "Steve the Dung Beetle: On A Roll" by Susan R. Stoltz I knew I had to create this craft. This is the kind of book my boys love, I mean it is about a dung beetle, what boy wouldn't love it. The mention of anything about poop immediately makes my boys giggle. I love that this fun book also gives important information about why the dung beetle is so important for the environment.
This activity is a simple craft with minimal supplies needed. I even provide a dung beetle for you to print out. Your child simply needs to add details with a black marker.
Supplies:
- Paper plate
- Brown paper scraps
- Pipe cleaners
- Glue stick
- Tape of your choice
- Black marker
- Scissors
- Dung Beetle template
Instructions:
- Take a plain paper plate and glue pieces of brown paper down. I used scraps I had and I also used pieces of a brown paper bag.
- Print out the dung beetle on white cardstock and cut it out using scissors.
- Fold the dung beetle in half lengthwise.
- Use a black marker to draw details on the dung beetle.
- Cut 2 pipe cleaners into thirds. You will have 6 pieces total. I used a dark blue colored pipe cleaner. I also cut off 2 small pieces to use for the antennae.
- Use tape to attach the pipe cleaner to the back of the dung beetle. I chose tape to make sure they were attached securely and quickly.
- Glue the dung beetle onto the dung ball. I placed glue on the front folded half of the beetle and glued it down.
