Counting Books
Here is a great list of books to practice counting with your toddler or preschooler. These are also great for kindergarten and 1st grade students.
- “Bear Counts” by Karma Wilson: Practice counting number 1-5. Join Bear his friends as they count things around the forest. Can you count along with Bear?
- “Mouse Count” by Ellen Stoll Walsh: Snake gathers mice and counts them as he gathers them in a jar. He was so hungry, so he kept gathering until he had ten mice. What will happen to the mice? Count along as you read and find out!
- “Anno’s Counting Book” by Mitsumasa Anno: Have a great time exploring different ways to represent the numbers 0-12. I love this book, as children can explore independently as there are no words in this math book. This book illustrates the number with the numerical number and a picture with unifix cubes. What can you find on the page that represents that number?
- “Dinner at Panda Palace” by Stephanie Calmenson: Diners arrive at Panda Palace looking for seats. Count along as Mr. Panda helps get guests seated.
- “How Do Dinosaurs Count to 10?” By Jane Yolen: Count along with the dinosaurs from 1 to 10.
- “Ten Red Apples” by Pat Hutchins: Count down from 10 as apples keep on being taken from the tree. Will there be any left for Famer?
- “Count the Monkeys” by Mac Barnett: Let's count all the monkeys. Turn the page to begin counting.
- “Spooky Hour” by Tony Mitton: Join Cat and Dog as they count down from 12 on their way to a Halloween party.
- “Ten Sly Piranhas” by William Wise: 10 sly piranhas were swimming in the river and one by one they disappear!
- “Ten Little Ladybugs” by Melanie Gerth: An adaptation to the song ten speckled frogs sitting on a log. This book involved rhyming and prediction which makes it so much fun to read. You and your child will enjoy counting down the ladybugs from 10.
