Clifford the Red Dog Retelling Puppet

Clifford the Red Dog Retelling Puppet

The Clifford books by Normal Bridwell have been a love of many children from decades. Along with the television show and movie, he is a well recognized dog that children love.

These stories are so great for retelling the story for young readers. Sometimes when they get to the end of a story, it is great to ask "What happened to Clifford in this story?" Well, for early or pre readers this may be a very challenging task. So one thing you can suggest is to go back and walk through the pictures. As your child looks through the pictures have them stop at each picture and retell what happened. Continue through all the pages in the book.

Some great questions you can use to help them retell with details are:

  • What happened first? What happened in this picture?
  • Point to the items on this page. Tell me about what happened?
  • Look closely at the picture to remind you of what happened.
  • Can you use the words next, after, then and last when retelling the story?
  • What is the next important thing that happened? If you don't remember, turn the page and look at the details in the picture.

To add to the fun of retelling the story create a Clifford puppet by folding a square of paper into the famous dog. Your child can then use the puppet to reinact the events that happen in the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Supplies:

  1. Red and white Construction paper
  2. Hot glue gun
  3. Jumbo Popsicle stick
  4. Black pom pom
  5. Marker
  6. Scissors
  7. Ruler

Instructions:

  1. Use a ruler to measure a 9 inch x 9 inch square.
  1. Fold the red square in half to create a triangle shape.
  1. Cut a rounded nose on the bottom point of the triangle.
  1. Round out the ears evenly on each side. Next, fold and glue down sides to create ears.
  1. Use white paper to create 2 oval eyes. I like to save scraps of paper to reuse for other projects. Use a black marker to create pupils in the eyes.
  1. Glue eye onto body and add eyebrows using a black marker. I used a black marker to trace the outer ears to add details to them.
  1. Glue a black pom pom on for the nose.
  1. Finally, hot glue a popsicle stick to the back to create the puppet.

Clifford is completed and ready for dramatic play, retelling of a book or creating a new story.
