Fun Fall Activity for Preschool & Kindergarten

This Busy Little Squirrel craft is a simple and engaging fall-themed activity for kids. Using basic supplies, children can create their own adorable squirrel while practicing cutting, gluing, and color recognition.

This craft is ideal for preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary classrooms, as well as homeschool or at-home learning during autumn. It’s perfect for combining art, literacy, and seasonal learning.

Pick up a fun book to read aloud with your child. "The Busy Little Squirrel" by Nancy Tafuri is a great fall story about a busy squirrel. Squirrel is so busy getting ready for winter he has no time to stop and spend time with any of his friends. After reading is a perfect time to create the busy squirrel craft.

Supplies Needed

  • Brown, orange, and tan construction paper or cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Paint
  • Sponge
  • Glue stick or liquid glue
  • Markers or crayons
  • Optional: googly eyes, cotton balls

Step 1: Prepare the Background Paper

Get your paper ready by sponge painting. Your child will love using a sponge to add paint all over the paper. You can let your child choose any colors they would like for the background. I chose to use fall colors, but the choice it's up to your child.

Step 2: Make a Tree

After painting your background, create a simple tree on brown paper. After drawing, cut out the outline of the tree. Add details to the tree with black marker.

Step 3: Add the Tree and Squirrel to the Background Paper

Glue the tree onto the background paper. After, glue the squirrel onto the tree branch.

Step 4: Optional Writing Extension

To finish, add a sentence about what squirrel was doing. Have your child complete the sentence, The bust squirrel _____________. Allow your child to complete the sentence with any word/words they would like to. After completing the sentence, add the paper to the bottom on the art.
