Ant Hill Art
Make this ant hill from the story "I Made These Ants Some Underpants" by Derick Wilder. The main character in this books make underpants for everyone around her. These little underpants for the ants were so cute.
Supplies:
- Construction Paper
- Washable black ink pad or paint
- Markers
- Neon Orange Cardstock
- Scissors
- Paper bag ( I purchase mine from the Dollar Tree)
Instructions:
- Take a brown paper bag and crumple it up. Draw a ant hill shape and tear along the line. I did this to create a more natural effect.
- Glue the ant hill onto a background piece of paper.
- Use an ink pad or paint to make ants on and around the ant hill. Make sure each ant has 3 body parts. This is a good way to teach your child that all insects have 3 body parts, a head, thorax and abdomen.
- Create the ant's legs and antenna using a black marker. I also drew mandibles on some of the ants.
- Next, create the little underpants for the ants. To do this I simply drew a capital letter D on my paper. I added a c shape for the leg holes on each pair of underpants. One tip is to always draw a little bigger than you need to help with cutting. You can always cut off some of the marker. Although this may be difficult for your child to cut, allow them to try. It is important fine motor skill practice. You can always help if needed.
- Glue the underpants on the ants and the ant hill.
