All Are Welcome...in our Class
"All Are Welcome" by Alexandra Penfold is a great book to make all children feel that school is a welcoming place. This book explains how all children are welcome at school and I love the message. I also love the beautiful illustrations by Suzanne Kaufman. This book show many different kinds of children, all are represented. I think this depiction is so important for children to know how special they are. This is a wonderful book to read for the beginning of the year to help in building a positive classroom community.
Allow your class to create self portraits on this sheet that let's them know all are welcome in your class. Allow children to draw themselves anyway they would like. Encourage them to be creative and to even add some items that make them unique to their portrait. They could also add items they like, example a soccer ball, a paintbrush and paint or a picture of their dog in the background of the picture. Display these self portraits in the classroom or hallway. This is a great activity to display to help build a positive classroom comunity.
