10 Awesome Books about Ocean Animals

This is an amazing list of new and classic books about ocean animals. I love the lessons that are taught about life and friendships in some of these texts. I also love the new books touching on protecting and taking care of the ocean. This is so important for young children to be aware of the effect humans are having on the oceans.

  1. "Commotion in the Ocean" by Giles Andreae:  This book includes many poems that your child will enjoy retelling or extending the poem.  Ask:  What might happen next?  Why did that animal do that?
  1. " Mister Seahorse" by Eric Carle:  Mister Seahorse is responsible for taking care of the eggs after Mrs. Seahorse has passed them off.  Great story to retell with all the animals he encounters throughout the ocean.
  1. "Swimmy" by Leo Lionni:  Swimmy is brave and helps the other fish face their fears.  The fish work as a team to avoid the bigger animals in the sea.
  1. "I am Not a Fish" by Peter Raymundo:  Learn about real animals in this fun story about a jellyfish who doesn't feel like a jellyfish.  The starfish help him see names don't matter, it is who he is that is important.

7. “Jules Vs. The Ocean” by Jessie Sima:  Jules is determined to make a sandcastle, but the ocean is making it difficult. Can she build the best and biggest sandcastle with her big sister’s help.

8. “Bloom” by Julia Seal:  As Luna returns to the reef after her adventures, she discovers many of her friends are missing.  Unfortunately, the ocean is in trouble from all the trash being put in the ocean. Can the bloom of jellyfish help?

9. “Mother of Sharks”  by Melissa Cristina Marquez: Melissa makes the most of the last 5 minutes left at the beach exploring the tidal pools. She discovers more than she imagined and her heart will forever hold a special place for the sharks of the ocean.

10. “Little Turtle and the Changing Sea” by Becky Davies: Little turtle is off to explore the beautiful ocean throughout her life. As she grew, she changed along with the ocean.  However, the ocean was strange and no longer friendly. How can we help keep the garbage out the ocean and away from all of the animals in the sea?
