Fiction Books

1.   Ten Apples Up on Top by Dr. Suess:  This book was published under the pseudonym Theo LeSieg.  This silly and fun book is great for kids of all ages.  A great read aloud that has many sight words that will have your child begin to start to recognize and read words if they are not already.  In this book the characters, a dog, lion and tiger race around balancing apples of their head.  This book is great for extension activities in math and even STEM activities. 

2. Bad Apple by Edward Hemingway:  This is a great book about an unusual friendship between an apple and a worm.  This unexpected friendship creates a problem in the orchard.  Will Mac and Wil let the apples bully them into not being friends?  This book touches on the topic of bullying and how to choose what makes you happy in life.

3.      Apple Trouble by Ragnhild Scamell:  Oh, dear!  A red, ripe apple causes a big problem for hedgehog and leads to even more problems. Will she ever be able to make it to her nest for the winter?

4. The Biggest Apple Ever By Stephen Kroll:  There is a contest at Mouseville School to find the biggest apple.  As the class learns about apples they search for the biggest apple, but aren’t most apples the same size?  How can they find the biggest apple?

5.      Applesauce Day by Lisa Amstutz:  Making applesauce is a family tradition.  Follow this family as they pick apples and turn into applesauce. After reading this book, make an easy applesauce in your crockpot.

Non Fiction Books

 

1.      Apples by Gail Gibbons:  This is a great nonfiction book pick to learn about apples.  I love all that all of Gail Gibbons’ books include so much information in the text and the nonfiction text features.  This book is full of diagrams with labels, captions, charts and more!  This book stands out from other nonfiction books with its beautiful illustrations.  This book will get you and your child excited about fall and all things apples.

2.       Apples for Everyone by Jill Esbaum:  Learn all about how apples grow on trees and their physical characteristics.  What happens after apples the leave the orchard? So many delicious ways to enjoy the apple.

3.  Johnny Appleseed By Jane Kurtz:  Learn all about John Chapman who planted apples across the country and earned the nickname Johnny Appleseed.

4.  Apples, Apples Everywhere- Learning about Apple Harvest by Robin Koontz:  Learn all about how apples are picked, what they are used for and ones to avoid.

5.  Watch it Grow- An Apple’s Life By Nancy Dickmann:  This easy to read book will teach children about the life cycle of an apple. Wonderful photographs and labels help identify the part of the apple plant as it grows from seed to apple.
